God’s provision allows for campus updates

Randy Grimm, COO, recognizes God’s provision for campus updates

The past couple of months have been filled with many different updates to the campus, and the next few months will bring even more. The windows in the Education Building and Madison Hall have been replaced. Randy Grimm, Chief Operating Officer at CU, explained that an insurance settlement allowed for the update. “We’re replacing them because of a severe thunderstorm that came through here on March twenty-seventh, 2019. The windows are being supplied by Pello Windows.” Grimm continued, “The storm caused over a million dollars worth of damage. We not only replaced the windows on those two buildings but replaced the roof on the education building and the conference center building. Those roofs should now last for another twenty to twenty-five years.” Grimm went on to express his gratefulness for God’s providence. “That was money that we didn’t have to raise because our insurance covered it. So within all of that, God just provided in huge ways. Once again it just shows God’s goodness to Calvary.” The dorm lounges’ appliances are also being updated. Grimm said, “I would guess that the lounge ovens are the originals that were there when the building was opened which was in 2011. Some of the refrigerators have been replaced throughout the years, but I think even some of those are original. So, they were desperately in need of being updated.” This need was met by the generosity of the senior class who chose to replace the outdated appliances as a senior gift. The final big update being made this summer is the installment of new flooring in the Student Life Center (SLC). Grimm explained that this will “enhance the look of that building on the inside. This new epoxy covering will have a new long-lasting effect on the floor; plus, it will look awesome! When you walk in and see that, it should be eyepopping!” The flooring will be finished by the last week of July. Grimm recognizes that raising money for these updates has shown the love the community has for Calvary. “With the Phone-a-thon, a lot of alumni gave a lot of money to help replace that floor. And of course, at the Feast ‘N Fund, where we raised the rest of that money, that was just friends of Calvary. Which shows that there’s a real love for Calvary in the community.” Alumni and partners of Calvary are not the only ones Grimm is grateful for. “And when you have the student body, who see needs and are willing to step up — through student senate or other ways — and help meet those needs, that says a lot about the student body.” Grimm also feels that this process has shown how God cares for CU. “Everything that’s being done is to benefit the campus, but the ultimate goal is to benefit the students. The flooring in the SLC, the windows in the buildings, and the new appliances — they all have a direct benefit to the students. God’s been good to provide all those things.”
Second Annual Feast & Fund Auction Success!

Second Annual Feast & Fund Auction Success!

“First item up: 4 tickets to the May 5 Sporting KC game! We’ll start the bidding at $150!”

And with those words, the Feast & Fund Live Auction took off like a shot! Ringmen circled the crowd of 173 people as hands shot up, bidder numbers were called, and people laughed as our beloved guests animatedly vied for the items they desired.  The familiar rhythmic auctioneer chant swirled around the Student Life Center for a little over an hour until $65,046 was raised to buy the Calvary University students the much-needed appliances and furniture for the Kansas City dorm!

The Calvary University administrative staff and business partners worked tirelessly to make the second annual Feast & Fund Auction a fun-filled evening for all and by God’s strength and grace, the night was a success! Postponing once to allow us to bid farewell to the nasty winter weather proved to be a blessing as more attendees were able to make the “snow date.”

The doors opened at 5:30 pm on Friday, March 29, to allow our attendees to look over the 49 silent auction items before dinner at 6:30 pm. The smoked BBQ brisket dinner put together by our own David Allen, with sides provided by Jack Stack’s, was a huge hit as there wasn’t a single scrap of leftovers.

Our generous gold sponsors Bill & Debi Keeney of KW Realty Southland Partners, Heritage Companies, and Pickett Insurance were recognized before the live auction began. These businesses partner with Calvary for many events,  have done so for many years, and Calvary appreciates the way they continue to support our students.

The live auction featured 22 items and included things like autographed sports memorabilia, processed meat, firearms, exotic trips, and student-made goods.  During the Fund-A-Need segment, attendees gave generously and raised $18,860 which has been matched by a generous donor!

Calvary University wants to thank everyone who came out to support this event or gave in absentia. Your heart for the students is so appreciated and treasured. Keep your eyes open for upcoming information on the 2020 Feast & Fund Auction!

March is a very busy month for Calvary.  The Theatre Department will be presenting Newsies seven times over the next two weekends.  Click here to purchase tickets.  We also have Calvary Days, our campus preview event, coming up next weekend.  Click here for more information.

In the midst of all this activity, Cycle 4 will be ending, and a new cycle will be beginning.  Shortly after that is Spring Break which coincides with the Chorale Tour.  Click here to see the Chorale’s schedule which includes stops in Kansas, Colorado, and Nebraska.

The end of March brings the new auction date and a recital by senior Cherrish Palmer.  Would you pray that the weather has no further impact on any of these events?  We thank the Lord for each of the students, faculty, and staff who make these events happen.  Would you pray for health and energy to abound?  Finally, we hope you’ll consider attending one or more of the upcoming events!

Christian Leaders Conference Focuses on Reality of Creation

Christian Leaders Conference Focuses on Reality of Creation

Weekly Portraits of Calvary Life

On February 8, Christian leaders and Calvary students gathered for a one-day conference focused on creation.  Dr. Baurain taught the first session, and Dr. Cone spoke on how to use the truth about creation in evangelism and discipleship.  Dr. Gromacki’s lesson on why believing in a literal Adam matters doubled as Chapel for the students.  After lunch, Dr. Dodds addressed the theological significance of creation.  Dr. Boyd taught the final session of the day.  It is our prayer that all of the attendees came away with an understanding of the importance of the literal, six-day creation.

The 2018 Clay Shoot Benefit was held on October 20 at Powder Creek Shooting Park.  This was our fourth annual event, and God once again provided wonderful weather.  Eight teams comprised of 38 individuals participated in the sporting clays competition.  This year the winning team included three Calvary alumni and our Chief Academic Officer, Dr. Teddy Bitner.  Dr. Bitner also won the prizes for best individual shooter and most consecutive hits.  We want to express our appreciation to our sponsors – MidAmericare & Patmos Healthcare, Bushnell, and CZ-USA.  All proceeds from the event will go toward student scholarships.

Celebrating God’s Blessing at the President’s Dinner

Celebrating God’s Blessing at the President’s Dinner

Weekly Portraits of Calvary Life

Last Thursday almost 200 people joined us for the annual President’s Dinner.  The theme for the evening was “Celebrating God’s Blessing!”  After dinner the program began with two songs by the Chorale.

The Calvary Chorale sang Kum Ba Yah.

Then we presented Hand in Hand Awards to Bill and Debi Keeney and Graham Union Church for their tremendous support of Calvary.

Dr. Cone announced two recent, huge blessings.  First, we have 401 students enrolled in classes right now!  Second, Calvary has been approved to offer a PhD in Bible and Theology launching in January 2019.  Following Dr. Cone we heard testimonies from three students as well as reports about God’s blessings in the Athletic Department, Colorado Innovation Center, and Kansas City campus buildings.

Student Tori Stahr gave a testimony.

The evening concluded with the first performance of Calvary’s new music group, lux voces.  We are thankful for each person who came to celebrate with us and for the students who served in various capacities throughout the event.
