A strong first half allowed the Warriors to get a large lead as the team picked up a road win on Saturday defeating Trinity Bible 64-53 in Ankeny, IA. With the win, the Warriors move to .500 for the season at 3-3. The victory also marks the third in a row for the team against Trinity.
“We were happy to get the win,” Warrior Head Coach Tressa Shoemaker said. “We came out really strong defensively. We’ve also worked extremely hard with rebounding and it was good to see it pay off today with more offensive rebounds.”
From the opening tip, the Warriors worked the ball around and found open looks. They shot the ball at 43.8% accuracy in the first quarter which allowed them to go up 17-5. They didn’t look back after the fantastic start. Their defensive pressure caused Trinity trouble. The Lions turned the ball over 25 times and it set the tempo that Calvary would never relinquish.
The Lions found their groove defensively in the second half as they started getting some nice stops. They held Calvary’s offense in check and chipped away at the lead, but Calvary’s momentum was strong enough to carry them to the finish for an eleven point victory.
“It was a good team effort,” Shoemaker said. “We keep having glimpses of how good this team can be and it was good to see everybody score today. We have been working to get everybody involved in the offense because we know we will need it down the stretch in February.”
Taylor Hunter and Anna Holloway were the only players in double figures with 22 and 13 points respectively. Anna Davis contributed 13 rebounds to the effort. Rebounding was a key stat for the Warriors in the game as the team won the rebounding margin 49-37 including grabbing 14 offensive rebounds.
Next up, the Warriors enter Christmas break. They return to campus on January 3.
