It was a banner year for Division II basketball program Calvary University as the NCCAA released their annual Winter/Spring 2018-19 Scholar Teams. To be eligible for this award, teams needed a minimum grade point average of 3.40 on a 4.00 scale for all combined student-athletes on the team.
Southwestern Christian University’s women’s basketball team took the lead this year with a 3.78 team GPA, as Calvary University followed closely behind in second place out of the 31 teams that received national recognition. The Lady Warriors collectively achieved a 3.74 team GPA to receive this honor.
“What we’ve seen across our level of basketball is the importance of the student in the term student-athlete,” Head Coach Tressa Shoemaker said. “One of the most important things we can do is to promote an environment where we foster growth in the classroom and in turn, develop the next generation of teachers and leaders to continue that mindset.”
“We seek to recruit highly motivated ladies who are academically driven to be great,” said Shoemaker. “They love the Lord and are seeking to grow in their relationship with Him above all. They care about their classes and their degree with all that they have, they are highly motivated, they have a high GPA, they are selfless and sacrificial, and they display a great work ethic.”
“Our program and our recruiting have both been carefully designed for excellence in all areas,” said Shoemaker. “Here are the pillars of what we strive for in the classroom.
- We advocate for our Academic Center.
- We implement mentors, study groups, and accountability.
- We put teammates together in classes to help motivate and encourage each other.
- We think studying is important.
- We educate on our academic standards.
“I am proud of this team,” stated Shoemaker. “They have taken a lot of ownership in what we’ve asked them to accomplish both on and off the court. Every girl on this team had a choice to make each day to take responsibility for their academics. Some of these ladies told me that they were making it a goal to do better in the classroom than the previous semester. That showed dedication and sacrifice for themselves and for their teammates. They desired to strive for excellence and to make sure they wouldn’t let their teammates down. The future is exciting for the ladies in this program.”

Weekly Portraits of Calvary Life
Halfway through the 2018-2019 season, our Lady Warriors basketball team has a 9-1 record! Their only loss so far was in their first game back in early November. Coach Tressa Shoemaker has a very young team filled with only freshmen and sophomores. However, their lack of college experience has not been a problem! The players work hard and play well as a team. This week the Lady Warriors defeated Manhattan Christian College, something that hasn’t been accomplished for many years. Both the women’s and men’s teams are in the midst of a stretch of home games this month. Join us at the Pyramid Athletic Center to cheer on this fantastic team!

Weekly Portraits of Calvary Life
The Calvary Warriors basketball teams spent almost all of January playing road games. Now they get to play their final regular season games at home! On Tuesday, February 6, both teams play host to Central Christian College of the Bible. Then the final home games of the season will be on February 9 versus Barclay College.
Paige Specht brings the ball up the court.
The Lady Warriors will try to defeat CCCB after losing a close game to the Saints back in December. They will look for a similar result against Barclay after leaving Haviland with a win on January 26.
Isaiah Miller scores for the Warriors.
The men’s team lost a close game to Manhattan Christian on Tuesday and will look to get back in the win column after having the weekend off from game action. Injuries have plagued the Warriors this season as two players tore anterior cruciate ligaments.
Don’t miss your last chances to come to the Pyramid Athletic Center to cheer on the teams!

Coach Ashley Spicer, Paige Specht, Alyssa Splitter, Tasha Krahn, C.J. Lewallen, Kristen Jolly, Kaela Gingrich, Tori Stahr, Arianna Erixson, and Alyssa Krestan sang during the service.
Last Sunday our women’s volleyball team and Zeb Green, a member of the men’s basketball team, traveled to Graham Union Church in northwest Missouri to take part in the morning service. They were invited by Randy Grimm, Calvary’s Chief Operating Officer, who is also the pastor of the church. The team sang a few worship songs just like they do before and after their matches. Zeb and each of the ladies shared how they came to attend Calvary and what they like about the school. Though Graham Union Church is small in numbers, they are generous supporters of Calvary. For several years, they have provided scholarships for students, and they enjoy getting to meet students and hear how God is working.
