The 2018 Clay Shoot Benefit was held on October 20 at Powder Creek Shooting Park. This was our fourth annual event, and God once again provided wonderful weather. Eight teams comprised of 38 individuals participated in the sporting clays competition. This year the winning team included three Calvary alumni and our Chief Academic Officer, Dr. Teddy Bitner. Dr. Bitner also won the prizes for best individual shooter and most consecutive hits. We want to express our appreciation to our sponsors – MidAmericare & Patmos Healthcare, Bushnell, and CZ-USA. All proceeds from the event will go toward student scholarships.

Weekly Portraits of Calvary Life
Fifty-five students have participated in this week’s J-Term classes. That is the highest J-Term enrollment in many years. While many of the students came back to campus to attend these classes, some viewed the sessions online. J-Term is beneficial for students looking to lighten their course load in the future by taking one class this week before all the others start. The flexibility of online participation is an added bonus! The courses offered this week were Bible Study Methods/Hermeneutics, Counseling Cross-Culturally, American Military History, Music Technology, Introduction to Philosophy, Ethics, and Conflict Resolution.
Dr. Gromacki taught Bible Study Methods/Hermeneutics.

Dr. Bitner welcomed the new students.
On Wednesday, chapel time was devoted to welcoming the new students via Convocation. Faculty wore regalia and lined the center aisle. The new students entered to applause and sat in the first several rows. Returning students and staff filled many of the remaining chairs. Once the faculty made their way to the stage, Dr. Bitner read some of the history of convocation, and we sang a hymn. Luke Pauli, the Student Senate President, gave a heart-felt charge to the new students and asked them to live each day as if it were their last. Hailey Bair, a talented student, sang “How Great Thou Art.” Dr. Cone’s presidential charge encouraged the students to be like Onesiphorus, who “refreshed” Paul as seen in 2 Timothy 1:16.
The students were told more than once that Calvary will provide them with a fine education – just like many other schools would. However, what sets Calvary apart from those other schools is the family atmosphere. Welcome to the family, new students!
What a beautiful sight – a chapel full of students!

Weekly Portraits of Calvary Life
During the last week of June, several Calvary staff and faculty traveled to the IFCA International Convention in Kalamazoo, Michigan. It was a good time of fellowship, encouragement, and messages on the topic of “Always Reforming.” Dr. Bitner gave a seminar on church security issues, and he, Dr. Hessel, Ginger Hessel, Randy Grimm, and Ruth Grimm represented Calvary throughout the week at our display table. On Wednesday evening there was a gathering for Calvary alumni and friends with more than 35 in attendance. Dr. Cone spoke at the first General Session and then spent the rest of the week as the main speaker for the IFCA Youth Convention in Upland, Indiana.
